Days after militants threatened family of a senior police officer in Shopian district, Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Shesh Paul Vaid on Wednesday warned ultras that they too have families.

“Militants should realise they too have families. Let them (militants) take this as a warning,” Vaid told a national news channel in response to the ransacking of a DSP level police officer’s house by militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district earlier this week and threats to his family members.

“This is between police and terrorists and families should not be brought into this conflict. If the police start doing this (threatening), what will happen to their (militant) families,” he said.

A group of 10-12 militants had reportedly entered the house of DSP on Monday night and after ransacking it, warned the family members of serious consequences if the officer did not quit his job. The officer, who is posted in Srinagar, was not present in the house when the incident occurred.

“The militants told the family that since the police was damaging the property of the families of ultras and those who give shelter to them, they are going to retaliate,” sources said.
