Letters:Trump's rhetoric

Trump's move has nothing to do with curbing 'Islamic terrorism' in the US

Business Standard

With reference to the Reuters report, “Donald Trump’s new travel ban order lists 6 countries, leaves out Iraq” (March 7) the ban reinforces the underlying phenomenon of post-truth, where facts take a back seat and emotional outbursts shape perception.

Trump’s move has nothing to do with curbing “Islamic terrorism” in the US; it is merely to gain political brownie points. None of the 9/11 terrorists, nor any of those involved in terrorist attacks in the afterwards, were from the banned nations. In fact, 15 out of the 19 hijackers were Saudi Arabian nationals, a country not on the banned nations list. The reason: is a major trade partner of the US, with the president personally involved in business ventures therein.

Instead of rhetoric, the should focus on pressing issues like lax gun laws, which have claimed more than 200 lives, including children in various school shooting incidents since 2000.
