Over 86 percent turnout in second phase of polling in Manipur

GUWAHATI: While second phase of polls in Manipur in 22 assembly constituency witnessed an impressive voting percentage of 86 percent, a powerful bomb explosion in Imphal injured six persons.

The polling percentage is likely to increase further. Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur told ET, “ 86 percent is polling based on reports based from 75 percent polling stations, from 25 percent polling parties will come back on Thursday.”

In first phase the voting percentage for 38 constituencies stood at 87 percent. In 2012 assembly polls the voting percentage of the state was 79.08 percent.

A senior police officer told ET, “The blast took place around 5.30pm outside a pharmacy in Thangal Bazar.”

There were some incidents of violence in Tamenglong Assembly segment however those incident was outside the polling booth. There was some case of damaging of EVMs in Chandel however those were replaced. There were clashes between the Communist Party of India and the Congress workers in Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district. Police had to resort to firing in the air to bring the situation under control.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, who is contesting from Thoubal seat, cast his vote at a polling booth in Khangabok Assembly constituency. Activists turned politician Irom Sharmila is contesting against the chief minister in Thoubal.

Singh said, “This election is a referendum. We will get around 40 seats. Large number of Central ministers including Prime minister and Home minister campaigned in Manipur polls.”

Sharmila said that she is fighting for change. “I am fighting against money and muscle power and stand for justice, peace and love.”

Altogether 98 candidates including four women are in the fray for second and final phase of Manipur polls. Ibobi Singh’s son Suraj Kumar Okram is contesting from the Khangabok constituency.

Suraj said, “Congress will get thumping majority.” BJP meanwhile is confident that high voter’s turnout is in favour of change.
