New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday issued a showcause notice to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav in a case of violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) owing to remarks he made at an election rally last week.
At an election rally in Gyanpur, Yadav had said: “I have heard that voters are being given money. My advice to you is to keep the money with yourself and vote for the bicycle.”

In the notice sent to Yadav by EC dated Monday, the poll watchdog has said his statements comes under “corrupt practices” and violates the Representation of People’s Act (RPA) as well as the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Yadav has to now respond by 5pm on 7 March as to why no action should be taken against him.
