Vodafone, Idea to launch new data, voice plans to counter Reliance Jio

NEW DELHI: Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, India’s No 2 and No 3 telecom operators, have come up with new plans with daily data benefit and free unlimited voice calls for their prepaid customers. The new plans could be seen as a step aimed at countering Reliance Jio’s data-rich prime offers that will be applicable for the Mukesh Ambani-led telco’s customers starting April 1, 2017.

The Aditya Birla Group-telco is offering unlimited voice and 500MB data per day, for 28 days for Rs 348. A company spokeswoman said that this is a segmented offer, which is being promoted to non-data users of certain type using 4G handsets.

Vodafone India, on the other hand, will launch a new plan to match benefits under Jio’s Rs 303 Prime plan. Under Rs 342, the telco will offer unlimited calling along with 28GB of data per month along with FUP of 1GB per day. It will also launch a Rs 346 plan for prepaid users to offer unlimited calling with just 10GB of data for 28 days.

Vodafone has started sending message to its prepaid customers across circles. A spokesperson didn’t revert toETqueries on these plans.

Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telco, had previously rolled out two aggressive bundled plans at Rs 145 and Rs 349 to counter Reliance Jio’s Prime offer. Under these packs, Bharti Airtel is offering 14 GB of 3G/4G data over a month, bundled with unlimited voice calls, according to a Credit Suisse note.

After six months of offering all services for free, a plan that helped Reliance Jio net 100 million subscribers in a record time, Chairman Mukesh Ambani last month said that Reliance Jio would not levy fees on calls. For the next financial year beginning April 1, the company’s existing users and those coming on board this March will continue to get high data benefits under 10 plans listed under Prime service.

In a bid to make its Prime offers more attractive, Jio on Friday launched a buy one get one free offer. As part of the offer, those recharging with Rs 303, Rs 499 and above before March 31 will get additional benefits. Customers recharging with Rs 303 will get an add-on of Rs 201 which will give 5 GB free data. For Rs 499 and above, customers will get a free add-on of Rs 301 which gives 10 GB of free data. The benefit of the free-add on will be given automatically by Jio.
