Indian actress and folk-pop singer Ila Arun says that today's popular music has lost the essence of Indianness.
"The young generation is supporting music with sync sound. (Influenced by) Western music. And the Indianness is going away," Ila told PTI here.
In town to stage her theatrical production "Ghosts," based on Henrik Ibsen's famed play, Ila says "My next music album is ready. I meet people who ask me about my next album. But I don't know how to reach out. You put a lot of energy into compositions but you don't know how to reach out, what is the new medium to reach out. This is indeed a sad situation."
"People like us don't understand this business where there is everything on Youtube and digital media. But where is the money and who is making money. There is no transparency."
Expressing happiness over her role in Srijit Mukherjee's "Begum Jaan," Ila says "I am doing a character, who gives strong support to Vidya Balan."
Vidya is the protagonist of the film, a remake of Srijit's Bengali film "Rajkahini," based on women suffering after partition.
"My role is what was portrayed by Lily Chakraborty in the Bengali version 'Rajkahini'. The audience, including those from Bengal must come to see 'Begam Jaan' and compare it with 'Rajkahini' once it is released," she adds.
About "Ghosts," the actress says, "This play is about a strong woman's voice. I set the backdrop of a haveli as Rajwada but this could be anywhere else. It could be a 'sambhrant' (aristocratic) Bengali family or a Muslim family. This is a strong play, a dark pay and a very dramatic play.
