ETMarkets After Hours: Rail-linked stocks gain as Suresh Prabhu unveils plans for new year

NEW DELHI: Benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty closed over half a per cent down after hitting their fresh 52-week highs in early trade on Thursday. Barring the BSE Auto index, other sectoral indices ended in the red on BSE.

The 30-share BSE Sensex closed 144.70 points, or 0.50 per cent, down at 28,839, while the 50-share NSE Nifty settled 46.05 points, or 0.51 per cent, down at 8,899.

Here’s a look at the stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Thursday:

Shining stars: Metal majors such as National Aluminium (up 5.24 per cent) and Hindalco (0.19 per cent) advanced after China ordered producers in 28 cities to slash output during winter, as Beijing intensifies its war on smog. However, the BSE Metal index closed 0.53 per cent down at 12,055.93.

Buzzing stock: Shares of TCS remained in the limelight after the company informed the markets regulator that Tata Sons, the promoter group of the company, intends to participate in the forthcoming Rs 16,000 crore share buyback plan. TCS shares closed 0.85 per cent higher at Rs 2,501.

Stake sale talks: DLF shares corrected over 8 per cent after the company’s promoters KP Singh and his family decided to sell entire 40 per cent equity in the retail arm DLF Cyber City Developers to Singapore based private equity firm – GIC. The scrip closed 8.11 per cent down at 141.10.

On track: Shares of Railway-linked companies such as Texmaco Rail and Titagarh Wagon jumped after the railway minister Suresh Prabhu presented Indian Railways Freight and Passenger Business Action Plan 2017-18. Shares of Titagarh Wagon closed 2.43 per cent up at Rs 105.45. Texmaco Rail advanced 0.50 per cent to Rs 90.25. Shares of Kernex Microsystems (India) settled 3.32 per cent up at Rs 42.

Bitter dose: Shares of Wockhardt slipped nearly 5 per cent after the drug major on Wednesday said the US health regulator has issued a warning letter to its step down subsidiary Morton Grove Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Spurt in OI: Stock futures of Jubilant Food saw the biggest jump in open interest (OI) at 34.40 per cent. It was followed by Biocon (up 33.86 per cent) and Godrej Consumer (up 28.86 per cent).

Most active securities: JP Associates emerged as the most active stock in terms of traded volume on NSE on Thursday. It was followed by GMR Infra, TTML, Unitech and DLF.
