PM Narendra Modi to act as local MP in Varanasi, interact with locals

VARANASI: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s big show in Varanasi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav have finalised a fourhour road show in the PM’s constituency for Saturday.

The SP-Congress alliance has also launched a “Chalo Kashi” programme, asking youth volunteers to reach Varanasi to carry forth the message, ‘help two youngsters form the next government in Uttar Pradesh’. Videos titled “Dard-e- Banaras” have also been put out by alliance strategists that carry voices from locals who say that promises made by Modi to Varanasi remain unfulfilled.

The alliance has roped in students from Banaras Hindu University who have come together to highlight the “Dard-e-Banaras” campaign. “Travel across Varanasi and you will find people disillusioned with the PM for his false promises and no delivery.

Darde-Banaras are testimonials of locals in Varanasi on their plight and issues, of neglect by the PM,” a Congress leader said. These videos are being played across the alliance campaign video vans plying around Kashi.

The Varanasi administration is looking at a gigantic task ahead of it on Saturday as the PM will also land in Varanasi that day and may visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Baba Kal Bhairav Temple.

The Rahul-Akhilesh road show is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm from the Police Lines and travel nearly 12 km till the Lanka Intersection in the city, covering three urban constituencies of Varanasi.

Modi is scheduled to hold three rallies between Saturday and Monday in Varanasi. The programme is a closely-guarded secret, even as a party functionary told ET that the PM could “act as the local MP” in Varanasi on Monday and interact with locals.

Modi’s cut-outs are being put across the city to allow people to take selfies. BJP president Amit Shah may hold a road show in Varanasi on Monday. Stand-alone hoardings of Modi have also sprung up across Varanasi, indicating that the party is banking on its most popular face in the last lap.

Giving Modi hoardings competition is Akhilesh-Rahul hoardings that have started dotting the route of their yatra. Akhilesh Yadav is slated to hold two stand-alone rallies in Varanasi on Saturday before the road show.
