The Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (I/C), Prime Ministers Office, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. met a group of students from here today. The students belong to MES Abasaheb Garware College, Pune and are post-graduation students of Mass Communication and Journalism. The students were in Delhi on a study tour. Before coming to Delhi, they have also visited Firozpur and Amritsar districts of Punjab.

During the interaction with the students, Dr said that the students pursing journalism act as opinion makers for the society, so they should work with a positive outlook and should highlight more of developmental issues. He interacted with the students on the various emerging issues including Jammu and Kashmir, demonetization, GST and North East, among others.

Throwing the light on the initiatives of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Dr said that on Independence Day, 2015, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had announced the abolition of interviews for recruitment to non Gazetted posts and this was implemented from January 1, 2016. The Minister greeted the students that they belong to the state of which is one of the first states to implement this decision. He said that the data provided by reveals that it has helped the state to save money and in addition, it has also provided a level-playing field to the youth by curbing nepotism and corruption. He said that there are some states which are yet to implement this decision. The Minister has written a reminder letter to these states today to work in the direction of implementation of the decision of the Government for abolishing interviews for non-Gazetted posts. He said that the youth comprise more than 65% of the population in the country and the focus of the Government is on initiatives with youth-centric approach.

During the interaction session, Dr said that the preferences of the viewers/readers and the media are also changing gradually. The focus of the media is now shifting from metro cities to the far flung regions of the country e.g. North Eastern region, he added. The recent demonetization decision taken by the Government has shown positive results and resulted into almost 60% decline in the terror-related activities and about 50% decline in the Hawala transactions, he added.

Dr motivated the students to have a positive approach in their profession and also conveyed his best wishes for their future.
