Opposition seeks Kerala food minister's resignation over high rice prices

KOCHI: The opposition parties have asked for the resignation of the food and civil supplies minister P Thilothaman over the unprecedented rise in the prices of branded rice in the state.

The Congress-led opposition have charged that the rice prices have shot up by almost 50% in the state.

Seeking to move an adjournment motion, IUML leader M Ummer said the government has failed to arrest the rice price hike. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala called for the resignation of Thilothaman.

However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Wednesday the Centre's decision to cut Kerala's eligible share of rice is the main reason for the prices of the grain to shoot up in the state.
