Nadeem Javed is top Congressman in East Uttar Pradesh

JAUNPUR: In the vast expanse of the adjoining Jaunpur and Azamgarh districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Congress owes a lot to one young man standing tall for the Grand Old Party — Nadeem Javed.

The first-time Jaunpur City MLA stunned everyone in 2012 by winning the seat after securing nearly 51,000 votes and beating Samajwadi Party’s sitting MLA amid an SP wave. In the earlier election Congress had polled just 3,000-odd votes here.

Javed, 40, a close aide of party vice president Rahul Gandhi, points to the Ram Ghat crematorium in Jaunpur as he asks for a second term. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is talking about shamshan (cremation ground) and kabristan (graveyard).

Come and see – I got Jaunpur’s biggest shamshan, Ram Ghat, reconstructed and a new road built to it. I got the sacred pond of Poorvanchal’s revered temple Chowkidham cleaned,” he told ET. He was national president of Congress’ student body and Youth Congress general secretary before Gandhi asked him to fight from Jaunpur, his home town.

While Varanasi district is the more high-profile one in the last phase with eight seats, Jaunpur district with nine seats is the biggest block in Phase seven. SP holds seven of these seats and the BJP and Congress hold one apiece.

This time, Congress is contesting two seats in Jaunpur as part of the alliance. Jaunpur city has been plastered by Javed with his hoardings and campaign material featuring Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul, Dimple and Akhilesh Yadav.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now coming to Jaunpur city for a rally on March 4. The BJP candidate, Girish Chandra Yadav, said Javed travels in a fleet of expensive sports utility vehicles and this is ironical for the “dilapidated” Jaunpur. “I travel in an SUV as I can afford it. Does anyone in Jaunpur say I am dishonest?

If anyone raises a finger on me on honest, I will not contest another election. The BJP should talk about development. I have done so much for Jaunpur. What has the BJP MP here done in the last three years?” Javed asked.

Javed appears to be immensely popular in the constituency, especially for his oratory – a skill which was spotted by Congress leader Mukul Wasnik 15 years ago to draft Javed into politics.

On his daily village tours, he is invariably pressed to speak for at least five minutes. In Jaunpur city, where 1.10 lakh Muslims determine the winner, talk only is of the margin by which Javed will win.
