ETMarkets After Hours: Realty & auto stocks hog limelight; Sobha surges 15%

NEW DELHI: Propped up by fresh buying amid positive GDP data for December quarter and firm Asian cues, equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty settled at their highest levels in six months. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed 0.84 per cent, or 241 points, higher at 28,984, while the 50-share NSE Nifty index rose by 66 points, or 0.75 per cent, to 8,945.

Here’s a look at the stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Wednesday:

Ground Real(i)ty: Real estate stocks have been on a rising spree since the beginning of this calendar year. On Wednesday, the Nifty Realty index hit its highest level since November 2016. The index closed 3.88 per cent higher at 204.85. Among the 10 components of the index, Sobha advanced the most at 15.24 per cent, followed by Delta Corp (up 7.20 per cent), Oberoi Realty (up 6.32 per cent), Unitech (up 5.83 per cent) and Indiabulls Real Estate (up 4.59 per cent). Other components of the index ended in the green.

Bumpy ride: Shares of auto companies closed mixed after they announced sales figures for February 2016. Shares of Eicher Motors, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Maruti Suzuki closed lower by 2.06 per cent, 1.78 per cent, 1.44 per cent and 0.07 per cent, respectively. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported a 10.9 per cent rise in sales at 1,30,280 units in February against 1,17,451 units in the year-ago month. Royal Enfield, the two-wheeler division of Eicher Motors, posted a 18.88 per cent jump in February sales at 58,439 units.

Cementing gains: Shares of Prism Cement rose as much as 8.54 per cent in early trade on Wednesday after the company informed the bourses that it has secured supply of 18,300 tonnes per annum of coal from state-owned CIL arm Southern Eastern Coalfields. Later the scrip closed 4.77 per cent higher at Rs 99.90.

Fresh highs: Over 60 stocks hit their fresh 52-week higher on NSE in Wednesday’s trade. The list included Balkrishna Industries, Bajaj Finserv, D-Link, Escorts, Maharashtra Seamless, Jindal Stainless, The Karnataka Bank and Kwality.

Buzzing stock: Shares of Majesco advanced nearly 14 per cent in Wednesday’s trade after its US-based insurance arm Majesco, USA, launched two new solutions, Majesco Enterprise Data Model and Majesco Enterprise Data Warehouse.

Spurt in OI: Stock futures of NTPC saw the biggest jump in open interest (OI) at 23.28 per cent. It was followed by Hindalco (up 21.81 per cent) and DLF (up 20.47 per cent).

Most active securities: JP Associates emerged as the most active stock in terms of traded volume on NSE on Tuesday. It was followed by Unitech, TTML, Reliance Communications and JP Infratech.
