P Chidambaram seeks info from Delhi Police chief

A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday saw chairman P Chidambaram asking the Delhi Police Commissioner whether he was aware of the ongoing protest and what steps were taken by cops to maintain peace at the university.

His query, at the outset of the meeting, saw two BJP members objecting to it, saying the panel’s agenda of discussion was only the demands for grants.

However, Chidambaram pointed out that the issue of student protests was well within the ambit of the panel for him to make queries. He was supported by his party colleague Adhir Chowdhry who said the panel chairman had the right to seek explanation from the Delhi Police chief.

He told the chairman that he would get back with details. AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi saying, “expression of views must be restricted if it goes against national interest. “Every person who understands will support this. Hence the responsibility falls on everyone to stop something against nation’s interest,” he added.
