Reliance Jio ropes in Airwire for connected car device

NEW DELHI: Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm has awarded a contract to the US-based AirWire Technologies (AirWire) to offer the latter’s India manufactured connected car device to customers in India.

The AirWire Connected Car device is being manufactured in partnership with Reliance Jio in India, according to an official statement.

Having garnered over 100 million 4G mobile users in India with the help of free data and voice services, Jio is planning to enter automobile telematics with the launch of this car connected device.

Reliance Jio is currently in advance talks with automobile companies to launch the device very soon in India.

The price of this device is estimated to be either equal to or less than its Jio’s Mifi device which costs about Rs 2,000, a source had told ET.

A Jio spokesperson said in a statement that the telco has been working closely with AirWire in developing this unique product to enable a suite of services and apps that will make the driving experience unique for the consumers.

“Jio’s partnership with AirWire provides the connected car device platform in the vehicle for our connected car initiative, Jio Car Connect. Driving, owning, maintaining and securing the vehicle will now fundamentally change with Jio Car Connect and the AirWire device,” the Jio spokesperson said.

The IoT device will operate in the telco’s pan-India advanced 4G/LTE network enabling connect car apps and services such as Wi-Fi hotspot features, location based apps, automobile telematics, security and safety.

The device attaches to the vehicle’s OBD-II port over a cable in the vehicle, and it provides uninterrupted connectivity through Jio’s 4G LTE network. The device seamlessly uploads important vehicle data to the cloud for analysis and enables convenient and useful apps and services to the consumer’s smartphones.
