Alternative road to airport to be ready in three months

BENGALURU: The alternative road to Kempegowda International Airport from Begur, which is currently a kaccha road, will be fully ready in the next three months.

PWD principal secretary Lakshminarayana M said the government has already acquired private properties along the 1.5-km, 6-lane stretch at a cost of Rs 15 crore.

This 1.5-km mud road from Begur near Mylanahalli cross to the airport road is the gateway to the airport from Bengaluru east. It was thrown open to the public ahead of air show a fortnight ago.

“As soon as the mud settles down, the work on asphalting will begin,“ Lakshminarayana said.

Although this stretch is still under construction, the Bangalore Traffic Police has allowed entry of vehicles during the day . “We decided to keep the stretch open due to public demand.

The road will, however, be closed after 6 pm as there are no street lights.

Once the road we will restrict the work begins, we will restrict the movement of vehicles,“ Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), told ET.

The officer revealed that about 45,000 vehicles made use of this al ternative road during the five-day air show when traffic snarls plagued the Ballari Road.

Already a hit among those who are familiar with the route, the alternative road is particularly popular with taxis travelling to the airport. They use this road instead of the tolled Ballari road, which was the only access to airport for several years. “It's better to take this mud road instead of getting stuck on the national highway . Opening this road is a big help as I get a lot of passengers from east Bengaluru,“ Abdul Rahman, a taxi driver, said.

For those who are heading towards airport from the central business district, Silk Board, Whitefield, KR Puram and neighbouring places, this alternative road is already proving to be big help. Even though the airport is just a stone's throw away from Mylanahalli, the airport authorities are unlikely to open another entrance to KIAL as work on the second runway is going on.
