CBI reopens Manipur fake encounter case
IMPHAL: Fake encounters are back to haunt Manipur's ruling Congress with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reopening a case of 'fake encounter' killing involving reformed militant Chungkham Sanjit and Rabina Devi, a pregnant woman.
Taking advantage of the situation, the BJP has now made it an election issue.
The Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM) organised a protest recently demanding justice. Rights organisations say 1,528 people, including 31 women and 98 children, were killed in fake encounters by security forces in Manipur between 1979 and 2012.
Sanjit and Rabina were shot dead in in 2009. The issue created a storm when Thounaojam Herojit, a constable who shot Sanjit, claimed that he carried out the orders of additional SP (Imphal West) Akoijam Jhalajit Singh.
