Success looms large for VR company

PUNE: Kiran Bhat, chief technology officer of the year-old virtual reality firm, Loom.ai is on a professional high. A few weeks after his new venture raised a seed round of $1.35 million from Danhua Capital and Y Combinator, among other angel investors, he was named as one of the recipients of the Sci-Tech Oscar.

The Academy award is a recognition of the work he's done over the last seven years at Industrial Light and Magic, a Lucasfilm company, where he was responsible for animating characters like the Hulk in The Avengers and Tarkin in the recently released Rogue One. Bhat was at the Nass com India Leadership Forum in Mumbai last week where he spoke about the application virtual reality can have beyond just entertainment.

"We wanted to make this technology more accessible to people, which is why we set up Loom.ai," he told ET. Bhat, along with Mahesh Ramasubramanian, a Dreamworks veteran set up Loom.ai which can create a 3D virtual reality version of you, or an avatar, based on a single photograph.

"The tech stack is fundamentally different and built with artificial intelligence as the primary driver. Most humans move their faces in similar ways, so we said, why not build a digital human that can articulate like most people and then adapt it to your face," said Bhat.
