European sports brand Bergamont enters India

NEW DELHI: European multi-sport company Scott Sports on Friday announced the launch of German sports brand Bergamont in India. Scott Sports SA had acquired global bicycle brand Bergamont two years back, and sells across categories including city, trekking and mountain bikes.

A company statement said that for India, the bikes are being locally designed. Scott Sports India country manager Jaymin Shah said: "With both Scott and Bergamont, our product portfolio is complete."

Industry officials say changing lifestyles, increasing affinity to health consciousness and the proliferation of gyms has led to robust double-digit growth of the sports-related industry.

A study by research firm Euromonitor shows that in 2015- 2016, the domestic sportswear market alone grew 22%, ahead of the category's global 7% growth. The researcher forecasts that by 2020, the sportswear market will grow an additional 12% at sales of $8 billion.

Besides cycling, running and team sports have emerged as the country's fastest growing sports fitness segments, paving the way for global brands to set up presence in the country.
