Wins show November 8 has brought achhe din for BJP

NEW DELHI: BJP has put in a stellar performance in various local bodies polls and Assembly by-elections across states post-demonetisation, leading many to conclude that the exercise announced on November 8 has been welcomed by the electorate at large.

While BJP has made headlines due to its big wins in local bodies elections in Odisha and Maharashtra, the party has put in an impressive performance since November in other states as well.

“21 out of 26 seats in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation were won by BJP while in Gujarat we got 107 out of 123 seats. The party emerged victorious in 30 out of 40 seats in Faridabad,” BJP said in a statement. The party is confident that Assembly polls in UP will be a positive referendum on demonetisation.

BJP has also emerged as the principal opposition in Tripura Assembly by-election and won the by-polls (for both the Assembly and Parliament) in Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The saffron party was also the primary opposition in Parliamentary by-election in West Bengal, replacing the Left.

The three Vidhan Parishad seats in UP also came into the BJP kitty.

In the results announced on Thursday, BJP won eight out of the 10 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. Though Shiv Sena got more seats than BJP in BMC, the latter has got a majority in eight cities. Congress has been relegated to an also-ran position.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP general secretary Arun Singh will be in Odisha to monitor the formal announcement of local bodies elections. BJP sources said the party apprehends that ruling BJD may try to use its influence the outcome on some seats.
