Indian techie shot dead in US, shooter yells 'get out of my country'

NEW DELHI: India has rushed its diplomats to Kansas after an Indianorigin man was killed and another injured by a former US navy serviceman who mistook them for "Middle Easterners" in what was the first such incident since Donald Trump took over as president and initiated tougher rules for legal as well as illegal migrants.

Two Indians - Sr inivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani - were shot at in a bar in Olathe, Kansas. Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed and Alok Madasani was injured. During the incident, a third person, an American, who tried to intervene, also received injuries. The deceased and the injured persons are from Hyderabad and Warangal, respectively and have been working at Garmin in Olathe (Kansas).

Indian Consul RD Joshi has rushed from Houston Consulate to Kansas to render all possible assistance. Vice consul Harpal Singh has also proceeded from Dallas to Kansas. "They will meet the injured and facilitate in bringing the mortal remains of the deceased and will be in touch with local police officials to ascertain more details of the incident and monitor follow up action. They will also meet the community members in Kansas," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup informed.

"We will provide all help and assistance to the bereaved family. The Indian ambassador has also informed me that Alok Madasani, who was injured in the incident, has been discharged from the hospital."

"I have spoken to the father and KK Shastri, brother of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, in Hyderabad and conveyed my condolences to the family," foreign minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

The non-Indian American is being hailed as a hero by local media in Kansas as he tried to protect the two during the attack.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla died and Alok Madasani was injured when Adam W Purinton shot them after telling them "get out of my country", The Kansas City Star quoted a witness as saying.
