Rupee opens nearly 5 paise up at 66.91 against dollar

NEW DELHI: The rupee opened nearly 5 paise higher at 66.91 against dollar on Thursday on account of buying of American currency by banks and importers.

Meanwhile, the domestic equity market opened in green following mixed global cues. The BSE Sensex opened 62.96 points, or 0.22 per cent, up at 28,927.67, while the 50-share NSE Nifty index opened 29.50 points, or 0.33 per cent, up at 8,956.40.

The local currency on Wednesday closed 4 paise down at 66.96 against dollar.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) stood net sellers in domestic equity markets on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,953.62 crore with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 7,039.61 crore and Rs 8,993.23 crore, respectively.

Government bonds ended lower for a third session on Wednesday, on caution ahead of the release of the minutes of the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee and the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meetings. The benchmark 6.97% 2026 bond yield rose to 6.94 per cent from 6.90 per cent in the previous trading day.

On the near-term movement of local unit, Abnish Kumar Sudhanshu, Director and Research Head, Amrapali Aadya said, “Rupee is seem to hang around 67 ahead of India’s Q3 GDP data release on February 28. Q3 GDP number will be very closely tracked by every quarter of the market as it will offer the picture of real impact of demonetisation.”
