Congress Vice-president Rahul Gandhi countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged attempts to polarise voters by reciting a few lines from a popular Hindi film song: “Tu Hindu banega, na Musalmaan banega, insaan ki aulad hai, insaan banega (You will become not a Hindu, not a Muslim; the child of a human being will become a human being)”. Gandhi, who campaigned in his parliamentary constituency, Amethi, in Uttar Pradesh, recited the lines from a song sung by Mohammed Rafi in the film Dhool Ka Phool (1959) to bolster the Congress’ claim that Modi was playing divisive politics after realising that the Bharatiya Janata Party was fighting a losing battle in the state. The Congress leader also blamed Modi for taking away a food park project from his parliamentary constituency. Gandhi remained hopeful that the Congress would be come back to power at the Centre in 2019. He promised a much bigger food park in the area when that happened.
