Conciliatory talks convened by Government fails

The All India bank strike called for February 28 stands with the conciliatory talks between bank unions and Indian Banks Association (IBA) yielding no result here on Tuesday.

The United Forum of Bank Unions-an umbrella body of nine bank unions-has therefore decided to proceed with the proposed strike on February 28, C.H.Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) told BusinessLine.

The Chief Labour Commissioner of the Ministry of Labour had called for the conciliation meeting in Delhi on Tuesday.

The bank unions had among other things demanded "legitimate compensation" to employees and officers for extra hours of work performed during the demonetisation period.

They had also sought removal of gratuity ceiling under Payment of Gratuity Act, exemption of income tax on gratuity and leave encashment on retirement.

Besides criminal action on wilful defaulters, the bank unions had also demanded stringent measures to recover bad loans. They had also sought immediate introduction of 5-day banking.
