ETMarkets After Hours: TCS rallies on share buyback, Marksans rises 20%

NEW DELHI: Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty50 extended their gains for the third straight session on account of buying in selected blue chip stocks amid mixed global cues.

The 30-share index closed 192 points higher at 28,661, while the 50-share Nifty gained 57 points to 8,879. Traders were seen piling up positions in metals, information technology, telecom, power and real estate stocks.

Here’s a look at the stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Monday.

Okay to buyback: The board of TCS on Monday approved the proposal to buy back up to 5.61 per cent equity shares at a price not exceeding Rs 2,850, aggregating to Rs 16,000 crore. Cheering the announcement, the stock closed 4.08 per cent up at Rs 2,506.

Sky is the limit: Shares of Marksans Pharma surged nearly 20 per cent on Monday after the company informed the bourses that an inspection by the UK health regulator from February 14 to 17 at the Goa plant has been completed without any critical observation.

White revolution: Shares of diary stocks such Umang Dairies, Prabhat Dairy and Parag Milk Foods hogged limelight by surging up to 17 per cent on Monday. Reports said around 10 per cent of equity shares of Umang Dairies changed hands through multiple block deals in early trade. The scrip closed 16.52 per cent up at Rs 85.35. Shares of Prabhat Dairy and Parag Milk Foods closed higher by 1.68 per cent and 5.58 per cent, respectively.

Right number: Telecom shares soared after reports that Vodafone Group is likely to finalise talks for a merger with Idea Cellular within a month. Share price of Idea Cellular closed 2.55 per cent up at Rs 108.70, while those of Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) rose over 6 percent after The Economic Times reported that the company was seeking to be part of an entity that would include Reliance Communications, Aircel and MTS.

Fresh 52-week highs: Over 50 stocks hit their fresh 52-week highs on NSE in Monday’s trade. The list included CCL Products, Dilip Buildcon, Federal Bank, GAIL (India), Greaves Cotton, National Fertilizers, Jindal Steel and Power and SP Apparels.

Spurt in OI: Stock futures of DCB Bank saw the biggest jump in open interest (OI) at 75.70 per cent. It was followed by Dabur (up 43.13 per cent) and Indiabulls Housing Finance (up 35.74 per cent).

Most active securities: JP Associates emerged as the most active stock in terms of traded volume on NSE on Monday. It was followed by GMR Infra, Jindal Steel (JSPL), Marksans Pharma and Unitech.
