The auction for the 10th season of Indian Premier League began on Monday at 9.30 a.m., in Bengaluru.

Eight franchises are geared up to pick a maximum of 76 out of the 350 plus, who will go under the hammer.

This is the last auction of the 10-year cycle after which all players are set to go back into the auction pool. While the maximum squad strength can be 27, most franchises like to keep squad base between 22 and 24.

The Delhi DareDevils picked up West Indian Kagiso Rabada for Rs 5 crore after hectic bidding.

English all-rounder Ben Stokes was sold to Rising Pune for Rs 14.5 crore after hectic bids from RCB, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. Ben Stokes started with opening bid at Rs 2 crore and saw hectic bidding between Mumbai Indians, RCB, Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiants for about 5 minutes. Pune's available purse this morning was only Rs. 17.5 crore.

On Ben Stokes selection, Pune's Sanjiv Goenka of the RPS, said: "He's a complete player and he completes our squad. We've been lacking this one genre of player." He added, "We have many heroes but this is the one hero we were lacking it was a conscious strategy. We knew it was going to be expensive. We knew he was going to be there for the first 14 games. And, we're happy to have him for the first 14. We knew we were not going to get him for less. We are reinforcing our core, our playing XI."

On the strategy behind Stokes selection, Goenka said: "Yes. Steve Smith, Stephen Fleming, everyone's been a part of the decision to buy Stokes. It's been a collective, collaborative decision. Ben Stokes was our No. 1, 2, and 3 preference."
