Economist BB Bhattacharya dead

NEW DELHI: BB Bhattacharya, the former vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and an eminent economist, died in New Delhi on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 71 and had been ailing for a while.

A former consultant to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Bhattacharya advised various agencies and departments of the Indian government on macroeconomic issues. A trained economist, he was also part of India’s business academia, and held the professorial chair at IIM-Lucknow, one of India’s top four state-run management institutes.
