Supreme Court verdict in DA case: What will happen to Jayalalithaa’s properties?

CHENNAI: The judicial sledgehammer which smashed the political future of AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala has put spotlight on the status of vast estates, gold, buildings and diamonds that remain seized by courts.

Authorities must now move in first to remand the three convicts - V K Sasikala, J Elavarasi and V N Sudhagaran - in jails in Karnataka, then collect a total of Rs 130 crore as fine. The fine will be collected from all four, including Jayalalithaa.

The 250-odd properties attached by the court will now have to be seized and taken possession by authorities.

Next process in this regard will have to start soon.

The Supreme Court restored in toto the judgement and the findings of the trial court in Bengaluru which held all the accused including Sasikala's two relatives, V N Sudhakaran and Elavarasi guilty.

The trial court had sentenced Sasikala and her two relatives to four years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 crore each. Jayalalithaa was sentenced to four years with a fine of Rs 100 crore.

Jayalalithaa and three others were accused of allegedly amassing disproportionate asserts to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during her first term as chief minister from 1991 to 1996.

The AIADMK on paper has right to file review petitions.
