Rupee opens nearly 2 paise down at 68.90 against dollar

NEW DELHI: The rupee opened nearly 2 paise down at 68.90 against dollar on Monday on account of buying of American currency by banks and exporters.

Meanwhile, the domestic equity market opened in green following firm global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened at 116.17 points, or 0.41 per cent, up at 28,450.42, while NSE Nifty index opened 26.25 points, or 0.30 per cent, up at 8,819.

The local currency snapped a two-day winning streak on Friday and closed 3 paise down at 66.88 against dollar.

Foreign portfolio investors bought shares worth Rs 599.09 crore on Friday with gross purchases and gross sales of Rs 4,964.41 crore and Rs 4,354.34 crore, respectively.

Government bond yields recorded their biggest weekly gain in over three years last week, after the Monetary Policy Committee took a hawkish stance amid concerns that inflation may accelerate in coming months. The benchmark 6.97% 2026 bond yield fell to 6.81 per cent on Friday from 6.86 per cent in the previous day.

In the currency futures market, the most traded dollar-rupee February contract on the NSE ended at 66.99 on Friday. The February contract open interest rose 1.83 per cent from the previous day.
