PM Narendra Modi talks loot, Rahul Gandhi turncoats
NEW DELHI:With the campaign for Uttarakhand assembly polls entering its last leg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mounted his attack against the Congress at his two rallies in the state.
While Modi chose Srinagar and Pithoragarh to reach out to voters in the state’s hill regions, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s road show covering all the 11 assembly seats in Haridwar district was an impressive one.
Minutes after Modi accused Congress of looting Uttarakhand at his election meeting in Srinagar, Rahul lost no time in targeting BJP by saying that it (BJP) has given tickets to those whom the Congress has shown the door. “Hamne kachara bahar kiya. Modiji ne utha ke rakh liya (We threw the garbage out of our party and Modiji stored it)”, Rahul told the gathering in his reference to the Congress’ at least 10 turncoats who have got ticket from the BJP.
These turncoats include the nine MLAs who had revolted against CM Harish Rawat at the time of recent trust vote in the state assembly.
While Rahul covered more than 70 km during his road show, Modi is the second prime minister to visit Uttarakhand’s interior hill district Pithoragarh. Modi focussed on One Rank One Pension (OROP) and the future of tourism industry in the hills, besides his efforts to connect the “Chardham” (Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badridham and Kedarnath) with better roads and rail network in the hills.
Modi’s special reference to OROP in the hill parts has its own political significance in view of the good presence of serving and retired army-men. He also ridiculed the opposition parties for seeking proof of surgical strike conducted against Pakistan recently.
Modi also highlighted the Congress decision in UP to enter an alliance with the Samajwadi Party, which was against the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state. He reminded people about the Congress leaders stand against statehood agitation in support of the creation of separate state. Demonetisation also got refrence in Modi’s speech as an attempt to get rid of corruption.
Rahul’s presence in Hardwar is important for the Congress in the last leg of campaign for the assembly polls. Hardwar accommodates 11 assembly seats in the 70-member house of Uttarakhand assembly seat and CM Harish Rawat is contesting from its Kichcha seat. Hardwar also shares boundaries with UP’s parts which will go to polls on February 15 along with Uttarakhand.
