ETMarkets after hours: IT stocks outshine; SBI ends flat despite 71% YoY rise in Q3 net

NEW DELHI: The domestic equity market closed a choppy session on a flat note on Friday ahead of the December factory output data due later in the day. The BSE Sensex closed 4.55 points, or 0.02 per cent, higher at 28,334, while the 50-share Nifty50 index closed 15.15 points, or 0.17 per cent, up at 8,793.

Industrial output grew more than expected at 5.7 per cent in November 2016, the month demonetisation was announced, defying fears of a plunge because of cash crunch. The consensus expectation was for less than 1.5 per cent growth.

Here’s a look at the stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Friday:

Earnings impact: Shares of State Bank of India closed marginally in the green on Friday after the country’s largest lender posted a 71 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 2,152.20 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2016. The lender had reported a net profit of Rs 1,259.4 crore in the corresponding three-month period a year ago. The SBI stock closed 0.15 per cent higher at Rs 276.

Fresh 52-week highs & lows: Over 70 stocks touched their fresh 52-week highs on NSE on Friday. The list included Aegis Logistics, BEML, Godrej Industries, India Tourism Development Corporation, Jindal Saw, Monnet Ispat, Motherson Sumi, PTC India, PNB Housing Finance and Sintex Industries.

IT stocks outperformed: Among the sectoral indices on BSE, the BSE IT index surged the most at 2.06 per cent, followed by BSE TECK index (up 1.61 per cent), Capital Goods index (up 0.42 per cent), Bankex (up 0.24 per cent) and Power (up 0.12 per cent). On the other hand, BSE Healthcare index, Oil & Gas index and FMCG index declined 0.88 per cent, 0.69 per cent and 0.62 per cent, respectively. From the IT index, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Sonata Software and Infosys gained 3.13 per cent, 3.12 per cent, 3.06 per cent and 2.10 per cent, respectively.

Midcaps underperformed: The BSE Midcap index underperformed the BSE Smallcap and benchmark Sensex on Friday. The Midcap index closed 0.28 per cent down at 13,468 with Oberoi Realty rising 4.23 per cent to Rs 340. Among other midcap stocks, Aditya Birla Nuvo, ABB and NLC India closed higher by 2.99 per cent, 2.54 per cent and 2.43 per cent, respectively. The BSE Smallcap index closed 0.14 per cent up at 13,601.

Spurt in OI: Stock futures of State Bank of India saw the biggest jump in open interest (OI) at 23.76 per cent. It was followed by Bank of India (up 22.10 per cent) and Torrent Power (up 18.36 per cent).

Most active stocks: JP Associates emerged the most active stock in terms of traded volume on NSE on Friday. It was followed by State Bank of India, Suzlon, GMR Infra and Unitech.
