Opposition parties on Thursday continued with their attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his “raincoat” barb against his predecessor Manmohan Singh. While the Congress said it will continue to boycott the Prime Minister, the Left said the BJP is converting parliamentary democracy into dictatorship.

Congress Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said Modi is intolerant to criticism. “He lives in denial, but he is also arrogant. He has injected bitterness in the political narrative. He has used language which is unacceptable in political debates. He has dragged political debate to unacceptable low depths,” he said. Sharma added that the manner in which Modi has conducted his own speeches is unbecoming of a PM.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said Modi’s words were demeaning. “It is very demeaning, and undermines parliamentary democracy. The government is accountable to Parliament and Parliament is accountable to the people. But the government has refused to be accountable to people,” he said.
