Bridge & Roof's employees to go on mass agitation against government's decision to sell off the company

KOLKATA: Employees of Bridge & Roof, a city-based central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Heavy industries & Public Enterprises, government of India have decided to go on a mass agitation on February 10 against decision of the government of India to sell off the company through a 100% disinvestment.

“The unfortunate decision by the government will have a serious impact on the livelihood of thousands of employees and their families. We are left with no other option but to go for a mass agitation on February 10 at 11 am at Kankaria Centre on Russel Street, Kolkata,” Bridge & Roof Co, (India) Employees & Unions said in a media statement. Apart from 2200 employees on its rolls, there are around 15,000 direct and indirect workmen deployed across some 200 project sites of the company sites all over India.

“The company is continuously making profits and paying dividend to the government of India regularly. We strongly feel that Bridge & Roof does not deserve a degraded evaluation resulting in the decision for 100% disinvestment by the government,” the statement added.

Bridge & Roof is executing jobs on a nomination basis worth several crores of rupees for the central and state government and any change in the composition may lead to termination of such contracts, the employees said. It is also doing large jobs of central public sectors like oil & gas, power plants, ports & steel plants. Additionally, it is also executing various state government projects in the east and other strategic locations in the North east region. This includes Railway linking rural development, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road work and bridges to link remote villages. The company is also doing social infrastructure development jobs in low cost housing and works in disaster management of various state governments, while also undertaking infrastructure development work on behalf of various central ministries in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim & Assam. The employees & unions feel the disinvestment will result in retraction of these works, a move that is likely to impact development of the North East region.
