Power producers meet Republic Day demand of discoms

KOLKATA: Indian power producers supplied almost all the electricity demanded by distribution companies on January 26, falling short by 482 megawatts, which is one of the lowest levels in the four decades since such data has been compiled nationally.

The deficit in the past two months has been about 500 MW on holidays and weekends, when demand is low.

All states, except Jammu & Kashmir, reported zero deficit on holidays. On working days, the gap is about 1,000 MW.

"In my 35 years of experience in power distribution, I have never see power deficit to be so low," said an executive from the distribution sector. He emphasised that the data reflects the power received by distribution companies against their requisitions and the calculation is based on figures provided by distribution companies. Actual demand from a state may be higher.

"There are a few distribution companies which do not want to supply power to certain pockets in their states because the possibility of raising and receiving money is negligible from these pockets. Although there is demand for power in these pockets, they do not get reported as demand, thus bringing down the real demand estimation," the executive said. Data from the government show that the deficit during the weekend of February 4-5 was 582 MW and 524 MW, while the total reported demand was about 1,20,000 MW.

"Over the past few months, demand on holidays has been dwindling to about 1,20,000 MW. During these days, the deficit has been falling to very low levels. On other days, the deficit has been hovering around 1,000 MW," said the executive.
