In RS, Yechury accuses Centre of trying to hide death to prevent Budget deferral
The Rajya Sabha is likely to discuss the alleged ill-treatment meted out to late Lok Sabha MP, E Ahamed, who passed away in the wee hours of Wednesday, the day of the Budget presentation. The issue rocked the Lok Sabha, where the House was disrupted over the issue.
The children of the deceased MP, a former Union Minister, had complained to the Delhi Police and authorities that the RML Hospital did not allow them to meet him when he was under treatment. Ahamed was rushed to the Delhi hospital after suffering a massive cardiac arrest during the President’s speech in Parliament on January 31.
CPI(M) alleges mischiefRaising the matter in the Upper House, CPI(M) General secretary Sitaram Yechury demanded a proper and thorough investigation into the manner in which the death of Ahamed was handled. He said the Centre tried to suppress the news of his death fearing that the Budget may have to be deferred following the death of a sitting MP.
Yechury said he had got information on the issue from doctors. “Some doctors say he was declared dead when he was taken to the hospital. Some say he died subsequently in the ICU. And there has been interference; that is what I hear from the highest authorities in the country, from the PMO, and this is something that cannot be accepted,” the senior Rajya Sabha member said.
Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said a detail discussion is needed on the issue and said his party will raise the matter again on Monday.
‘Govt tried to hide death’Lok Sabha was disrupted when the Congress and the Left members raised the matter. “The body was kept there in inhuman way. His daughter and son-in-law too were not allowed to meet him for six-seven hours...This shows how the government shrouded such big incident to ensure the Budget is presented,” said Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.
