The National Stock Exchange (NSE), India's largest stock exchange by turnover, on Friday named Vikram Limaye, Managing Director of IDFC, as the new Managing Director, sources quoted to ET Now.

The announcement was made after the board of directors of NSE, chaired by former finance secretary Ashok Chawla, met in Mumbai to vet the decision, sources said.

NSE Board selects Vikram Limaye as MD & CEO.

The position was vacant ever since Chitra Ramakrishna quit the exchange on December 2 citing personal reasons. On December 5, the stock exchange had set up a four-member panel to look for the next MD of the bourse.

The panel also had M&M group chairman Anand Mahindra, former RBI deputy governor Usha Thorat and NSE independent directors T V Mohandas Pai and Dinesh Kanabar as members.

NSE is in the process of going public. It has already filed for its IPO and it likely to hit the market by March.

The development coincided with the stellar debut of BSE on the stock exchange. Asia’s oldest stock exchange BSE created history on Friday, as its shares got listed at a 34.62 per cent premium on rival NSE at Rs 1,085 compared with an issue price of Rs 806. The stock eventually ended the day at Rs 1,070, up 33 per cent over the issue price of Rs 806 apiece.

A chartered accountant with an MBA from The Wharton School, Limaye was also named a member of a four-member panel by the Supreme Court on January 30 to run the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the apex body for the most popular sport in the country.
On December 2, 2016, Chitra Ramkrishna unexpectedly quit as Chief Executive Officer of NSE, ending her 24-year career at the country’s largest bourse that she helped found. Ramkrishna, who took over as head of the exchange in 2013, cited personal reasons.

The NSE board immediately appointed J Ravichandran, group president, as in charge till the board appoints a new CEO.
