30 cabs seized for operating ride sharing services

BENGALURU: Karnataka Transport Department on Friday seized as many as 30 cabs - attached to two popular cab aggregators - for continuing with ride-sharing services, which the authorities deemed illegal.

Earlier on Monday, the department set a three-day deadline for cab aggregators to withdraw ‘UberPOOL’ and ‘OlaShare’, claiming that these ride-sharing services were violating the contract carriage permit.

The cab aggregators, however, continued to provide ride-sharing services for the public in the City. "Without causing inconvenience to the passengers, we seized as many as 30 cabs which were defying the orders. The traffic inspectors were asked to down these mobile-based applications, book a ride and seize the vehicle after dropping the other passenger to their destinations, Joint Commissioner for Transport (enforcement) J Jnanendra Kumar told ET.

"The enforcement started at 10 am to 1 pm on Friday. All the seized cabs will be produced before the magistrate court as we have no powers to levy penalty. If they continue to defy orders, we may suspend the permit," he said, adding the department had deployed ten traffic inspectors exclusively to check the operations of rider sharing services.

"The enforcement was carried out in places such as HSR layout, Banashankari, Jayanagara fourth block, Koramangala among others."

Kumar said the seizure of cabs were stopped in the noon as both the cab aggregators met Transport Commissioner MK Aiyappa and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, seeking an extension of the deadline.
